How does it work?

Queries Per Second (QPS) is the number of times a request is sent to a server per second. With regards to online advertising, it is used as an informal measure of how large an Ad Server or Ad Platform is – the more queries per second (Ad Calls), typically the more popular the service.

How to calculate QPS?

The calculation for QPS is straightforward. If you have the number of queries your system processes in a given day or month you simply divide it into the second.

Queries per month / 30 days / 24 hours / 60 minutes / 60 seconds = QPS

Queries per day / 24 hours / 60 minutes / 60 seconds = QPS

Why is QPS important?

Since QPS is a way to measure SSPs, the DSPs take this number heavily into consideration. For every ad request the SSP sends the DSP needs to have capacity to receive it.

DSPs are concerned with SSPs that send traffic that ultimately goes unmonetized. This costs the DSPs money to process without making any revenue on the transaction.

Often times DSPs limit an SSPs QPS either through a soft cap (can be adjusted and paced throughout the day) or hard cap (strict shut off limit). More common the DSP requests the SSP to limit their own QPS as a best business practice.
